30 September 2007 sees a five-kilometre sponsored walk through Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew to raise money for Breast Cancer Campaign. It’s an appropriate setting, as nowadays almost two-thirds of all approved anti-cancer drugs are directly or indirectly derived from plants. In fact, Kew is currently working on taxoids, an important element of cancer treatment that is closely bound up with the plant world – and the Gardens need your help. Visit Kew Gardens’ website for more information. Last year’s Autumn Friendship Walk raised nearly £20,000 and the Gardens’ aim to to exceed that total this year.
On 13 October Kew will be hosting a Big Draw Day as part of its Henry Moore exhibition. The aim is to produce art in various media, inspired by Moore’s work, with drop-in workshops open to the public. Wakehurst Place, Kew’s sister garden in Sussex, is also holding similar events.
